The Story of a Careless Mason
“Brethren, in my travels across the group I’ve been careless and lost nearly all my working tools.
I’ve left my Square at Wisborough Green and my Compasses at Lewes.
My Level is at Horsham, and my Plumb Rule was lost at Crawley.
My Pencil is in Uckfield and Haywards Heath is where I last saw my Chisel.
Just last week I lent my 24-inch Gauge to a brother in Hurstpierpoint and didn’t ask for it back.
I’m presenting the working tools in all three degrees at East Grinstead and I need your help.”
“I need 2 teams of willing volunteers.
Team Square will set off from Wisborough Green and take it to Horsham.
Horsham masons will provide refreshments and join the team, with the Level, onwards to Crawley.
With another pit-stop there, the Plumb Rule will be handed over and all three will continue to East Grinstead.
Team Compasses starts at Lewes. Their first stop is at Uckfield where they will rest a while and be given the Pencil.
I will arrange for Hurstpierpoint and Haywards Heath masons to drive the Chisel and 24-inch Gauge to The Red Lion at Chelwood Gate. They’ll buy you a drink and maybe join you for the last leg to East Grinstead.
One more thing Brethren. It’s a race, and you have to walk. It’s only 28 miles!

Thanks Ryan. You really should be more careful. So, let's hear from our Charities Lead, Nick Dutt, about what's really going on...
As part of the North Group’s support of the 2028 Festival and My28 in particular, we are organising two 28-mile walks between the North Group Masonic Centres sometime in the spring of 2027.
We will start early in the day, with the aim for reaching the East Grinstead Masonic Centre at roughly the same time in the early evening. Exact timings will be circulated closer to the time.
This walk is open to all members of Lodges and Chapters in the North Group – or anyone else who might be interested. You can either walk the whole of one of the routes or one or two legs of each, depending on your fitness and ability.
The plan is to have a buffet dinner once we all get to East Grinstead, for which there may be a small charge, which will be advised in due course.
We will also need volunteers to assist with manning the waypoints, providing transportation and emergency medical ‘evacuations’, if one of the brethren need a beer or other assistance. To take part as a walker or support driver, etc., please complete the form using the button above.

This is a great way for all members to get involved and do something tangible to help the Freemasons’ Chairty (formally the MCF) 2028 Festival and the My28 Challenge.
